MetSuite is a series of laboratory tests developed by the R&D Team of Aminpro oriented towards geometallurgical characterization at low cost and high reliability.

These developments have been presented in various metallurgical conferences with great success.

SAG Mill Trhoughput Estimation

With the new MiniSGI (SAG Grindability Index) test we can measure the SGI at substantially lower cost. The calibration is generated as a byproduct of the standard SGI test, and when the test is coupled with the sample crushing and homogenization work flow of an assay lab or a metallurgical lab, the cost is much lower than current testing alternatives. For large geometallurgical programs, the cost can be as low as $150 per test! This means that for the same budget, you can generate five times the data as the traditional approach.

Cost versus Precision

Current test methods can be adequate for calculating mill power requirements or throughput, but they are of limited use for the extensive, low-cost geometallurgical profiling required for large geometallurgy programs. This is because for these programs, quantity is usually more desirable than quality. It can be demonstrated that for a given budget or time frame, it is even more reliable, cost-effective, and time-efficient to average many cheap, lower fidelity data points than it is to perform a single, expensive, high-fidelity test.

Advantages of Geostatistics

Using large data sets for ore body characterization offers a secondary advantage. Once spatial correlation is introduced and geostatistics are used to generate a 3-D model of the deposit, the standard error of the mean estimate is reduced even further. Unfortunately, until now the use of geostatistics for grinding has been limited by the high cost of test work.

Low cost Work Index test

With the new MiniBond test we can do the “standard” locked cycle Bond test with less than 3 kg of sample. Once we have the calibration, we can do a rapid comparative test with less than 600 g! When the test is coupled with the sample crushing and homogenization work flow of an assay lab or a metallurgical lab, the cost of the test is less than $50.

The MiniKin test

A kinetic test of 2 time periods


It is a kinetic test with only 2 time periods and a total of 8 minutes.

We need at leat 10% (minimum of 10) standard tests and we can deliver Rmax and k of the minerals floated.

What does it consist of?

SedScan is the first automated settling test developed to take away the technician and reduce the test error through the use of precision instrumentation. The test consists of a transparent tube and sensors to measure the interface position as a function of time, using a sample size of less than 400 g of tailings feed material. The sensors also measure the supernatant turbidity. The system is constructed so that twelve tests can be conducted simultaneously, each with different flocculants dosage, pH, or other client-specific conditions. The results are logged electronically, processed and a report sheet is generated. The test results are interpreted in multiple formats including the Kynch, the Coe-Clevenger, the modified Coe-Clevenger, and the Willhem-Naide methods. The total cost per test is less than $40 for large volumes. This is a huge cost savings over traditional settling tests.

The Problem with Traditional Settling Tests

Flocculant selection, dosage, and dilution characterization are important parameters necessary to optimize thickener design and operation. For existing operations improvements can be made by comparing current operational parameters with a large number of alternate parameters to investigate improved performance and potential cost savings. These type of experiments are normally referred to as “Jar Tests” and their accuracy depends entirely on the operator, the generic laboratory equipment used, and visual observations of how the slurry settles with time. There is no normalization to control the quality of these tests, and this presents a challenge when trying to compare conditions for an in-depth sample investigation. Simply put, the test method is outdated and both the test accuracy and the data recovery can be improved.



The Problem with Traditional Methods

Traditional tailings deposition tests require large volumes of samples – in most cases more than two or three cubic meters of thickened tailings. Producing such large volume of tailings requires large quantities of sample, pilot scale grinding, flotation, and thickening operations. Not only is this expensive, it makes it very difficult to study the variability of tailings discharge parameters over a range of different ore zones, mineralogical conditions, or grind sizes. This usually translates into larger and more expensive safety factors.

The MiniFlume Test

The deposition and rheology test is performed in a small open channel flume. High precision instruments are used to measure the deposition profile as a function of time to develop a slurry rheogram (additionally measured using the lab viscosimeter). The results of the test are scaled to predict the profiling behavior for tailings storage facilities. The testing method, interpretation, and scale-up are performed by Dr. Gordon McPhail (SLR Consulting).

To date the MiniFlume test has been calibrated with 18 samples from South American, North American, and European tailings facilities.



The new test allows our clients, for the first time, to test for ore body variability of tailings deposition parameters. Due to the low volume requirements of the test (around 60 kg), tailings samples can be produced using much smaller equipment and procedures, normally on a more controlled laboratory scale. This means we can now generate deposition information for each ore type, time frame, or geographic zone in the deposit. You can design your deposition system to have just the right amount of flexibility to handle the changing ore characteristics. Understanding the actual deposition variability will give you confidence in the engineering and allow for an improved determination of the appropriate design factors.
